Changing Futures North East
Shortlist – Embracing Opportunity and Harnessing Risk
Who they are
Changing Futures North East is a family charity giving people the stability and self esteem to set and achieve their goals and live happier, fulfilled lives.
What they’ve achieved
In 2013 Changing Futures made the bold move to bid for a DWP Innovation Fund project supporting separated families. However, the payment-by-results model posed financial risks for the charity.
With support and scrutiny from the board Changing Futures won the bid. Thanks to hard work the model proved sustainable and the charity achieved an impressive 100% of its targets. This success has inspired Changing Futures to think big and bid for new projects that change even more lives.
Through the efforts of a participative board, Changing Futures was successful in shifting its organisational lens to work with separated families through the Department of Work and Pensions’ Innovation Fund.
Before its successful bid, the board led discussions and debates to analyse the risk and benefits and to ensure the change would fit with its mission and strategic plan. By devising a sub-group of board members, it was able to challenge assumptions and support and engage with service users to successfully identify their needs.
This work has had a positive impact. A recent independent evaluation showed substantial improvements in parenting alliance, for a statistically significant number of people, seven months after the project finished.
