Families for Children

Winner – Improving Impact – charities with 26+ paid staff

Who they are

Families for Children is a specialist adoption agency and charitable trust based in the South West.

What they’ve achieved

Families for Children’s pioneering Atrium project provides the specialist support that helps adopted children thrive in their new families.

At the core of its approach is a one-to-one care plan that includes tailored support and training for both the families and adoptees. It’s already having a massive impact in the local area. Research shows that as many as 9% of UK adoptions break down, meaning children return to care. Families for Children’s work has helped reduce this figure locally to 4%.

Why they are a winner

The charity’s vision has always been “to be there for adopters”. Atrium brings this to life by offering a focused model that meets both adoptees’ and families’ needs. From the start of the project, the board used in-depth knowledge of adoption to drive success by working very closely with adopters and working groups to ensure a joined-up strategy.

The board are now looking to grow the project – and it has been recognised as best practice that can be rolled out to other families in the future. Judges were impressed by the long-term impact the board helped create, which will transform the lives of a new generation far into the future.

What the judges said

“Families for Children has pioneered a new approach to holistic, long-term post-adoption support for families and children with proven results. The impact of this will be lifelong and transformational for the next generation.”
