Winner – Improving Impact – charities with 0-3 paid staff

Who they are

Home-Start Slough is an established voluntary service, supporting the local community and working in partnership with parents to empower them to give their children a better future.

What they’ve achieved

When you’re committed to creating sustainable impact, reaching more people matters. Which is why Home-Start Slough doubled down on diversifying services to support even more disadvantaged families in the local community.

To achieve this, in 2016 the board consulted with stakeholders to discover where services could be adapted to a more far-reaching multi-use model.

Trustees worked hard to find funding and recruited fresh talent to break new ground. This included everything from launching successful Emotional First Aid courses to offering specialist support for families that included children living with autism.

Why they are a winner

The judges were impressed by the way trustees were given specific responsibility for each project, working very closely with the staff team. Together, they identified simple and effective ways to record impact and highlight success. This included asking volunteers to gather evidence and feedback as part of their duties.

This practical evidence-based approach helped Home-Start Slough showcase success against clearly defined targets. For example, 82% of children with whom the charity works are now registered at a dentist, up from just 12% at the start of the project. Additionally, every family now understands the effects of tuberculosis, up 95% from when the work began.

These kinds of results have helped the charity secure new funding. It has also won more supporters and fostered closer relationships with the local community, which will help ensure this life-changing work continues for the future.

What the judges said

“Home-Start Slough have worked hard to understand the needs of their community and how they can best use their assets to achieve impact. They have moved from a single service model to multiple programmes to address health inequalities in Slough and are now embedded in the local community, working hard to build trusting relationships.”
