South West Blood Bikes provides an emergency, out-of-hours courier service to the NHS and Hospices throughout Devon. It is entirely run by volunteers, with no paid staff and does not charge for its services. The charity is aiming to save lives, improve patient outcomes, and also to save the NHS money that can be redirected to patient care.
Volunteers transport blood, samples, medicines, medical equipment, patient records, donor human breast milk, stem cells for transplant – anything the NHS needs moving urgently to benefit a patient.

Faced with daunting obstacles and limited resources, the board committed to extend the charity’s service area across England’s fourth-largest county. With a keen understanding of the urgent need for reliable blood transportation, the board navigated uncharted territory, leveraging trustees’ expertise in logistics and finance to chart a new course for the organisation.
Under the stewardship of Chair Mark and his wife Denise, South West Blood Bikes embarked on a meticulously planned four-stage journey, balancing ambition with pragmatism. Through transparent communication and strategic foresight, trustees managed stakeholder expectations and rallied volunteers to support the burgeoning operations across North Devon, Torbay, and Exeter. Faced with financial constraints, trustees secured donations of aged vehicles from national partners, laying the foundation for future growth while mitigating immediate costs. Over three years of relentless effort, the charity doubled in size and workload, becoming a vital lifeline for healthcare providers and patients alike.
South West Blood Bikes’ tireless dedication has yielded tangible results, completing more than 6,500 call-outs and saving countless lives. By replacing a faltering commercial service with a volunteer-driven organisation, the charity has saved the NHS in Devon more than £300,000. Key to its success was a culture of restraint, prudent financial management, and inclusive decision-making that ensured every voice was heard and respected. Today, with nearly 100 volunteers and a fleet of 18 specialized vehicles, South West Blood Bikes stands as an indispensable partner to NHS trusts, earning widespread recognition and respect for its unwavering commitment to excellence.
As the charity now transitions from a strategy of expansion to one of consolidation, the board remains focused on optimising operations and sustaining its impact for years to come. By pursuing ISO9001 accreditation and QAVS status, South West Blood Bikes aims to uphold the highest standards of service quality and accountability.
